CV Writing Advice
We would like to use this space to offer you our views and opinions on what makes a great CV/resume or any other form representing your knowledge, understanding, capabilities and experiences. We will refer to all of these documents as a CV however these principals do still apply to your design portfolio, website etc...
The purpose of this page is NOT to go into specific detail about what you should say as we believe every CV must be a personal document specific to you alone. The purpose here is to ensure you have the best tools to create, modify or present your CV.
As you know, Solid Contracts will always create notes specifically for you, which accompanies your CV when we introduce you to our clients. This ensures that if you are a high potential designer / engineer with a mediocre CV then you won't be judged solely on your CV creation skills.
Before we move on to the really useful advice, please give some thought to the purpose of any CV. Whether you are a Simulation FEA Engineer or an artistic styling designer, we would like to suggest that you consider what you hope to achieve by creating a CV? Will the CV really get you a job all by itself? This is certainly possible; however most of the time we believe that the purpose of a CV is to encourage a potential employer (and Solid Contracts) to offer you an interview. This is the end goal as far as your CV is concerned.
Please see some key factors below (in no particular order) which we believe will give you a better chance of interview offers from your CV.
1) Structure Having a clear structure for your CV from the start allows you to be in control of the message communicated to the reader. Just as most creative people need an element of structure to get the best out of them, your CV needs a well defined canvas on which to create your master piece. This won't be the key factor in making you a potential interviewee however it will give your image as a professional a great start.
2) Purpose What job are you trying to secure? Do consider this point: Should a CV used for applying to a 'SolidWorks Oil & Gas' job have the same content as a CV used for applying to a 'UG NX Super Yacht Designer' role? Our view is they should not. We appreciate that you may not always be using your CV for one specific job role; however a purpose or direction still applies.
3) Depth The best CVs are those that give you an insight into a person’s career in great detail. This doesn't have to be an essay for every role you've had, however please do consider that you portray a very different image about yourself when you say: “I worked in the oil and gas market designing a variety of products.” compared to: “I personally designed, tested and reverse engineered 3 hydraulic water pumps for a multi-national oil and Gas business as part of an 8 strong design team...”
4) Personality This may well be the most important point we share with you. Who are you? What do you want in life? What do you enjoy? What don't you enjoy? What are you passionate about? You are different from every other person in the world so as well as your experiences and current skills defining your suitability for a job, we believe that your likes, dislikes and personal vision make you stand out from others. You're not just a candidate number, you're a unique person. Consider this when creating your CV.
So… you have a structure for your CV; you have defined a clear purpose for the job you choose to get an interview for; and you have communicated the depths of your experiences while still expressing who you are as an individual. All that is left to do is ensure you get your CV to Solid Contracts as soon as possible so that we can find you your next 3D CAD related job.
